2011 Summer Language & Culture Program in Beijing

 

 

Program Overview

An affordable and quality 12-day program offered the Canadian TCSL Association for participants to learn more about China in the capital city of Beijing.  The Program consists of morning language classes, afternoon cultural activities, sightseeing and free time to explore the city of Beijing.  Visit historical sites such as the Great Wall, Imperial Palace, Ming Tombs and the National Stadium built for the 2008 Olympics.

*Participants taking part in both the Shanghai and Beijing Programs enjoy a 10% discount on the Beijing Program.  Program fee based on exchange rate in November, 2010. Additional charges may be required if exchange rate goes up.
** You can purchase your own plane ticket; or we can purchase a group ticket for you. Price of the group ticket will depend on the number of tickets requested.  It would be around CAD$1,300-1,400.
*** Participants are REQUIRED to purchase travel & medical insurances.

1. Read our Cancellation and Refund Policy and Terms, Conditions and Liability Waiver Agreement.  Indicate your agreement by signing the last page of each agreement.

2. Fill out the Application Form.

3. Pay a deposit of CND300.00 by check. This deposit is non-refundable. It will be deducted from the total fee. Please make check payable to the “Canadian TCSL Association”.

  1. signed agreement of the Cancellation & Refund Policy,

  5. confirm your participation by sending in a check of $200.00 for the balance of the program fee before March 15th, 2011.

HOSTING INSTITUTE
 

1. Beijing Teachers Training Centre for Higher Education  

Established in 1992, Beijing Teachers Training Centre for Higher Education is a training centre directly under the Beijing Bureau of Education.  It is affiliated with the Capital Normal University and draws expertise from universities in Beijing such as Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Peoples’ University and Beijing Normal University.  For more information on Beijing Teachers Training Centre, please visit:  http://gaoshi.cnu.edu.cn/

 

APPLICATION

 

2. Is there any competition to go on the program? Do I have to know Chinese to participate in the program?

Participation is on a first-come first-served basis.While there is no requirement of Chinese language skills, participants with some prior knowledge would benefit more from the experience. If you sign up for the program, it would be advisable to take some language classes before you go.

3. When will I know if I am accepted?

Within a week of receiving your application, we will contact you by email or by phone to let you know. You can also enquire by email.

4. Will participants meet before the trip?
 
There will be an information meeting in Vancouver before the trip.

5. Can I travel ahead of time?

Yes, you just have to meet up with the group either at the Beijing Airport or at our hosting institute.

 

ACCOMMODATION

 

6. Where do I stay?

You will be sharing a room at the International Culture Plaza at the Capital Normal University.  Rooms are equipped with air-conditioner, telephone, wireless internet connection, color TV and hot shower. Food, drinks, laundry and long distance calls are NOT included.

7. Are meals included in the program fee? How much do meals cost?

Breakfasts and lunches are included. Approximate dinner cost: CAD$6-10 per day.

 

GENERAL

 

8. What is the weather like in Beijing in May and June?

Cool to warm in May and becoming humid and hot in June. Average temperature in June is about 30°C degrees.  Most places are air-conditioned.

9. What clothes should I bring?

Summer clothes and a cap/hat. Do also bring a pair of long pants, a long sleeve top/shirt and a wind breaker for outdoor trips. It would also be good to have an outer layer in rooms with strong air-conditioning

10. What is the exchange rate from Rmb to foreign currency?

The Chinese currency is RMB (Renminbi).

11. What money should I bring to China?

You can buy travellers¡¯ cheques which can be exchanged into RMB at a bank in Beijing. You can also bring cash to be exchanged at banks.
