Course Description

CH1000 serves as an introduction to Modern Standard Chinese. Classroom activities will focus on: 1) proper pronunciation, development of listening comprehension andoral skills; 2) essential grammatical structures of the language, and 3) acquisition of written Chinese.

CH2010 is designed for students with some Chinese background, for instance they understand some of the language but cannot read nor write Chinese.Standard pronunciation, grammatical structures and the writing system will be the focus of the course.

CH2000 builds up on CH1000. Listening comprehension now involves more extended passages, which are closer to normal native speed. Dialogue on practice matters now also extends to cultural comparisons, society, current events, and problems of modern life.

CH2030 is offered during summer for the emerging York U/Fudan U exchange agreement.Built on AS/CH1000 6.0, this course equally emphasizes four basic skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and engages students socially, culturally, and physically in the language environment.

CH3000 is intended to improve the students’ ability to conduct conversation in both practical and cultural situations, and to start training them to read some unannotated works written for Chinese readers.

CH3010 (for Cantonese speakers) is in four parts: 1) The basic sounds and the pinyin system and the simplified characters. 2) Language reform in Modern China. 3) The development of modern literary Chinese as illustrated by selections from works of modern Chinese literature. 4)Comprehension and Practice of the Standard Spoken Language: Business.
